Ancient Egyptian sandstone wall fragment of a ruler in profile. 18th Dynasty. A stylized Egyptian Cobra can be seen on the left. The cobra represented the goddess Wadjet - the protector of Egypt, kings and of women in childbirth. The depiction of Wadjet resting on a sun disk, as seen here, is called uraeus. The uraeus is a symbol of sovereignty for the Pharaohs and it was usually incorporated into their diadem and/or crown.
